This lovely project popped up in Toronto a couple of years ago and we only became aware of it now. The re-purposed vending machine concept reminds me of another project we at the CDR hold near and dear which also serves up exclusive pocket-sized pieces of art.
From the creators:
Toronto Poetry Vendors is a mechanical poetry journal which operates out of refurbished gum vending machines. Produced twice yearly, issues consist of 10 single, hand-folded broadsides by 10 Toronto-based poets, which can be purchased from the machines for a toonie.

In addition to conveying a lot of information in a small amount of space (the 120 page catalog features more than 200 Canadian designs, over 70 designer bios and two curatorial essays), The Modern Eye catalog succeeds at conveying the tone of this era in Canadian design without resorting to flat-out mimicry. The design makes prominent use of Carl Dair/Rod McDonald’s Cartier Book typeface and a classic modernist grid structure, while the airy, full-bleed layouts, floating page numbers and unique cover treatment aim for a more contemporary feel.
”The Modern Eye curator, Allan Collier was interested in developing an eye logo for the cover, but this felt a bit too on-the-nose (and too corporate). Instead, we developed an eye graphic (with a tiny maple leaf ‘glint’) that could be laser cut into the solid red cover. All of the cover text is applied as a gloss coating, so what grabs your attention is the eye.“
- Michael Erdmann

Shapton takes the otherwise complex objects of trees and strips them down into stark, almost abstract shapes and colors. She distills each subject into its simplest form, using vivid colors in lush gouache paint. Her passion is evident in each painting: the waterbirch is represented as two pulsating red bulbs contrasted against a grey backdrop; the eastern white pine is represented by a close up of its leaves against a radiant summer sky.
