eVaro Electric Sports Car

Design: George Parker and Todd Pratt
Client: Future Vehicles Technology
Date: 2011

Claiming to be the most fuel efficient car in production, this Canadian design is part of the X Cars prize (similar to the famous X Prize for space flight). The car draws heavily from flight, in styling, obsessive weight drop, ability to be updated as new tech. emerges, and efficient use of resources. Part car, part plane, the eVaro is a leading design in the race to create zero footprint vehicles.

Power Smart Month Stunt

Design: Smak
Client: Power Smart Month
Date: 2011

These two green shipping container condos were organized as small living areas that seem similar at a first glance, but are differentiated by a major factor: energy consumption. One of the condos is wasteful, while the other is an example of energy efficiency. The two improvised cribs each feature a glass wall, facilitating passers-by to take a look inside and watch the two actors “living” in their unusual homes. This display demonstrates that the smallest changes make a difference if they are practiced by everyone. It is sure nice to see effective advertising campaigns promoting positive behaviors.

Seems like Earth Day came and went without as much of a bang as usual this year, but perhaps this is because I’m currently in Vancouver, where no issue is as hot as the Canucks/Blackhawks playoff series. So here is a belated post from DDB/Earth Day Canada. It’s hard to read, but the sentiment is: would you still litter if people knew it was you who did it?

Green Over Grey Living Walls

Design: Mike Weinmaster and Patrick Poiraud
Client: Green Over Grey
Date: 2011

Living walls are one of the most important tools to revive the cities we live in, a technology that gives buildings and urban spaces a part in the march towards sustainability. The living wall design is simple and straightforward, offering a range of benefits like improved building performance (less footprint), improved air quality, and less wear on buildings exteriors (I imagine it as a safety blanket for key architectural treasures, wrapping them in plants as a way to avoid erosion from pollution). One of the biggest advantages is at the neighbourhood level, where green walls could be used to drape over the poor architecture of our cities, provide the dual advantage of greening our planet and reducing the architectural load of city life, concrete jungles into an oasis.

Green over Grey, Semiahmoo Library – Surrey BC

Design: Mike Weinmaster, Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership and Darrell J. Epp
Client:
Date: 2010

The Semiahmoo library is the proud owner of the largest green wall in the world. The architecture of the building is not just pretty; compared to a similar sized conventional building, it consumes 49% less energy, has a 30% increase in water savings (including drought tolerant native plants for the landscaping), the build diverted 88% of landfill with a waste management plan, supported the local economy by using locally manufactured materials (almost 45%), and 54% of the buildings materials contain recycled content.

What also sets this building apart, is the artistic application of the green wall. Using plants as his brush, designer Mike Weinmaster was inspired by the artwork of the Coast Salish (including Semiahmoo) First Nations People, and the resulting wall is a stunning display – almost a kind of living mural.

Give It Up For Earth Day

Design:
Client: Earth Day Canada
Date: 2011

This year, Earth Day Canada has challenged us to change our behaviour starting this month. The easy to navigate Give It Up mini-site encourages us to take one or all of four specific actions: eat a meatless vegetarian or vegan diet; buy nothing new; turn off the TV and get outside; cut out toxic chemicals from your home. We’re given the tools to make a commitment (1 week to 4 weeks to year long), good, practical reasons for making the changes (with some easy to digest stats to back them up), a blog with tons of tips on how to, some great endorsements from some notable folks, and some incentives (beyond a clearer conscience and a healthier environment) to boot.

I’m not sure where you’d hang your “I won’t use toxic cleaners” hanger, and the graphic design isn’t mindblowing. But encouraging humans to change their behaviours and be more mindful of their impact on the environment is a worthy endeavour.

Happy Earth Day, Canada!

Earth Day Bus Cape

Design: Denise Rossetto, Todd Mackie, DDB Canada
Client: Earth Day Canada
Date: 2011

Photography Vicky Lam

Created to spark awareness for the Earth Day Hometown Hero program, which rewards environmental achievements with a $10,000 grand prize, capes were placed on the backs of bus seats. The deadline is April 22 so there is still time to nominate yourself, a friend, neighbour or organization you think is worthy. A great example of localized, grassroots marketing for a big cause.
