Assassin’s Creed II Video Game

Design: Ubisoft Entertainment
Client:
Date: 2009

The inaugural Canadian Video Game Awards was held in Vancouver this week and Montreal’s Ubisoft Entertainment took away four of the eleven prizes for Assassin’s Creed II: Best Game Design, Best Console Game, Best Visual Arts, and Best Technology (shared with Prototype, created by Vancouver’s Radical Entertainment).

The video game world is beyond my realm of experience, but since Canada is at the forefront of game development and design, I figured this was well worth mentioning. I have not played this game, but it looks like the graphics are outrageously good, and from the trailer, it looks to have all the requisite blood, suspense, dark cloaks and T&A to keep gamers interested until the next big thing is launched. If anyone who has played the game cares to comment, please fill me in on what it is that makes this game so good.

Take None subway poster

Design:
Client: City of Toronto
Date: 2008

The City of Toronto had these TTC posters up on subways, where there are frequently leaflets available for passengers to take (typically these end up on the floor and seats). These bold signs were refreshing in the often-obnoxious commercial landscape of the train, and directed us to the livegreentoronto.ca site – a “one-stop resource for living green” – all the while touting a message of “Reduce”, the most crucial and first of the “Three R’s”.

RecycleMe.org street poster campaign

Design:
Client: Trillium Gift of Life Network
Date: 2009

RecycleMe.org was launched in April of 2009 by Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) to promote awareness of organ and tissue donation. TGLN is a not-for-profit agency of the Ontario government focused on organ and tissue donation and making improvements to the system in order to save more lives. TGLN subsequently launched a tour of Ontario College and University campuses to target youth awareness of the issue in September. They worked with a youth panel for the 6 months leading up to the tour to ensure their campaign was properly communicated to the targeted audience.

Though I am no longer considered of the youth demographic, the Church Street strip around Ryerson was on my walking route home from work, and these street posters made me stop and pause. Though a bit rough around the edges, a closer look revealed a very well thought out plea and campaign. Further, I applaud the appeal to eco-minded pop culture in that organ and tissue donation is the ultimate form of recycling. I am not sure who is responsible for the design of these specific posters (can anyone fill in the blank?) but this seems to me to be a very smart project. Well done TGLN, you really did your homework!

Go to recycleme.org to check out the website, get informed on some myths and truths of organ and tissue donation, and to register to become a donor yourself.

The Weak Shop

Design: DDB Canada
Client: BC Dairy Foundation
Date: 2009

The Weak Shop was created to celebrate the importance of drinking milk. The shop presents the visitor with an array of faux products for non-energetic people who are lacking milk in their diet, and suffering because it. The site is absolutely amazing, using all the web tactics (Yoututbe, Flicker, etc) to maximize the effect. Well thought out, hilarious and hits all the points that great design should (mind, heart and crotch).

PS – Why are milk ads so great?
