I was a little surprised to see how closely the toboggan in the picture resembled the toboggans I've been producing, as I was working from 30+ year old memories. As for 'no longer being the rage': these toboggans are selling exteremely well due to the combination of speed (yes, they're as fast or faster than the plastic jobs), nostalgia, and build quality. Perhaps I should look at a buy-back program for used sleds - that coffee table looks fantastic!

How stable is it around the center? I remember a wood toboggan being pretty flexible.

Thanks Sue!

I love this project. It was a late night/early morning lab rat, an idea that popped up and was quickly able to make happen. I had a "why has no one done this before feeling". The table construction is pretty simple. Flip the odd runner and reverse them...drop the screws back in and you are a go.

I am pretty sure that these wooden sleds are no longer the rage., replaced by the faster and easier to haul plastic models. I hope people are inspired to dust off the old toboggan in their garage and give them a new life as some home/cottage furniture.

Susan, I can see the Frank Gehry reference for sure but my ego tells me I have a few years to go before sharing the same stage with his caliber of talent.
