St. Gabriel’s Stain Glass
July 20th, 2009
Design: Roberto Chiotti, Larkin Architects
Client: St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church
Date: 2008

The church is part of a shift in the role of religious architecture. This building connects the church-goers with the earth, and uses architectural devices (like form and structure) to teach theological lessons. While Catholic churches of old used paintings and sculptures, St. Gabriel’s has colorful windows that dramatically shift light during the day. “We are connecting our sacred space into the sacred space of creation,” Chiotti said. The church invites the public and connects them with nature and sunlight.

I like how they’ve de-emphasized the stained glass itself (maybe I’m being mislead by the pictures, which don’t show the windows at all) and focused on the effects of the light instead. The atmosphere that results looks pretty awe inspiring.
