Winnipeg Jets New Logo

July 23rd, 2011

Design: Department of National Defence
Client: True North Sports & Entertainment
Date: 2011

“The primary logo will feature a blue circle with the metallic grey silhouette of a CF-18 fighter jet over top a red maple leaf, echoing the roundel that graces the fuselage of Canadian air force planes. One of the secondary logos contains a stylized set of wings like the ones given to fighter pilots.

The look was developed with the help of the Department of National Defence as a nod to Winnipeg’s connection with the air force, as exemplified by 17 Wing, which operates out of the city”.

Aw poor Winnipeg, this set of marks is such a lost design opportunity! I am curious about “developed with the National Defence” means…did they help to fund the team?

Take the RCAF symbol… cheese it up so it would look at home on a beer can… then slap a jet on top (creating an indistinct blob). WOW, this is really sloppy work! Wonder who designed this (pretty sure it wasn’t the Department of National Defence)?

I have a feeling that this was done “in house” by some marketing folks. I just don’t feel it.

James White (Signalnoise) did a couple of fantastic off-the-cuff logos that work much better, and are a bit of a nod to previous Jets logos. Not on his blog yet, but they are on his Google+ wall…stream…page…thing.

THIS SUCKS SO BAD, it feels like an american high school team logo, or a US military team. Is Canada becoming pro military? Are Manitoba fans wanting this reference? I hope that this is not an early trend for design in Canada, that we follow the US pro-army graphics. BRAND CANADA needs a new face and direction!

I love the simplicity and retro feel. As well, there’s a touch of class in the fact they’re paying homage to our our military. It’s perfect.

This is revolting..as a ‘peger I cannot support this ideology and the idea of the team creating a military connection is sad. This feels so american. Of all the options it is sad sad sad that this iw wht is came up with.

I was completely disapointed here, uggghh.Following in CBC’s footsteps? Too cheap to pay someone with talent to design a new emblam? Whats wrong with the original? I say we as the public who support the team and line the bigwigs pockets should have had a say! Honestly with the “hockey night in Canada” jingle gone I watch American presentations of the NHL.And the jets with theis pathetic logo will not get any support from me. Most of us Canadians aren’t war mongers, we don’t mix hockey and war!!
    Disgusting………..

I am not sure if this is a money issue…there seems to be a misunderstanding of of useful and meaningful design can be. For me this is another example of design not being applied well. The strategy of True North is thin.
