This is such a nice project, an easily spotted wayfinding marker for folks in the downtown of Victoria, BC to get directions. Not only is it making the standard utility box more interesting, but ultimately reduces the visual load in the city by combining two purposes into one object (sign and box together). If this thinking took off, the amount of street signage, and general street mess would be reduced substantially. Way to go Victoria.

    SCOOPED! How embarrassing.
When I moved back to Victoria last year, I noticed these right away and thought, ‘there’s a great post for the CDR’… But I didn’t do it right away and soon enough, I just didn’t notice these anymore. They’re definitely a great solution: instead of adding more infrastructure, why not layer on top of what’s already there? These utility boxes are all over the Victoria, generally on or near street corners and right at eye level – perfect for this application. They add interest and beauty to something that’s a little unsightly and yet (to your point and my embarrassment) these are easily tuned out by those who don’t need them.
