Vancouver 2010 – Graphic Identity
October 1st, 2008
Design: VANOC design team
Client: Vancouver Olympic Committee
Date: 2008
The official graphic identity for Vancouver 2010 was just launched a couple weeks ago (which seems backwards doesn’t it?… mascots before identity?)… Anyway, we’ve read a few reactions (mostly positive), but we’d love to hear more of your opinions about the design.
Personally, I think the use of texture may be the nicest part. I’m also a fan of the illustrations combining natural and man-made elements – like the dragonfly float plane and the traffic light tree – though I may be biased because it reminds me of the exhibition graphics for Cabin.

If only they were done by SpaceCadet!!!… they are ok as they are, but would be so much stronger and fresh if SC got the contract.

Did I just catch a glimpse of Kirsten White’s Today’s Special on their inspiration boards at about 54 seconds into the video?

Good stuff. It will be interesting to see how the designs are executed here in Vancouver and in Whistler.

Too busy and the colours chosen are too bland. Vancouver is very grey in the winter. Their iconography for the cultural Olympiad is better.

Personally? I hate this stuff.
It looks dated already. Gross Illustrator traced photographs?! Not inspirational and reeks of design-by-committee.
And the trees! And the mountains! And don’t forget we are really into being green so wind farms! But the wind towers are actually trees! Get it?

Not a fan, and that’s an understatement. I know it’s an unpopular view, but to me this stuff looks like the ugly love-child of feminine hygiene marketing and corporate clip art. Just awful.

Traced…over rendered…dated…awful. A real step back in design. Look at the Turin graphics…very stylized. These make Canada look very unhip.

The way HBC and the Olympic Merchandise store screwed up orders is almost criminal. We ordered a parka, two hats, a scarf and a shirt. Everything except the parka and scarf arrived – we were told THREE WEEKS later ‘oh – your order? It was cancelled. We’re not sure why. And we are out of jackets and scarves and aren’t getting any more.’ Now it’s 5 days before Christmas and I am LIVID – this order was placed towards the end of October and JUST NOW after WE called them we found this out? What is the deal with HBC? Has anyone else experienced this terrible customer service and downright unprofessional business practices?
