Umbra Tie Clock
November 23rd, 2009
Design: Alan Wiesniewski
Client: U+ Umbra
Date: 2009

The Tie Clock is U+’s (Umbra’s higher-end division) latest repurposing product. Designed to give Goodwill ties a second life fanned out as a clock face, the style becoming the face of green design (reuse and cascade design). Not sure of the end result, it feels “design schoolish” and immature. With this said, I do think that this piece is coming from a good place conceptually and that the style is worth exploring.

I like it overall, but the clock face and arms feel wrong. It feels contemporary but with off the shelf hardware…too bad about the battery power too (going green is more than an aesthetic).

Yes, the face and hands evoke a “i was made in shop class” aesthetic. I hope I don’t see more DIY absurdities as the 1990′s become fashionable again.

It’s kind of a lovely concept… I agree that it suffers a little from the hardware, but to be fair, Umbra uses this same hardware on most of their clocks lately, so it’s a bit of a sacrifice for production. On the other hand, the fact that major manufacturers are incorporating this kind of creative reuse in their products is a really good thing and shouldn’t be underestimated.
