Coin Jewelry (Earrings and Charm)

Date: 2006

This was sent to me last week and I have not been able to find anything on who did them. They are really quite unique and have a raw charm, they feel like prison work and are truly inventive. If anyone has any leads, drop us a line.

Hey, those look familiar! When I was a kid (70s/80s) you used to be able to get them at the CNE, in one of those myriad craft booths like the place that made the dip candles cut into spirally shapes. I think the guy at the CNE booth made them, I remember he had a little workshop with tiny tools, dremels etc. and you could watch him do it with quarters and nickels. They cost a few bucks each. I always thought ‘huh, neat’ but never actually got one.
Love the site btw! The stuff here really jogs one’s memories.

They are done by a woman in Victoria BC who works in the Bastion Square market during the summer months. Her father originally started making them and she took over his business and has been doing it for many years.
Can’t remember her name off the top of my head… it’s an odd name. Lupina?? Something like that… She’s a lovely lady and her work is exquisite.

I nabbed one of these (beaver from the nickle) during a trip to Palm Springs (of all places!). The craftsman who made it did it to a lot of different currencies.
I still suspect that the Royal Canadian Mint would tell you this is illegal. You know, defacing the queen and all…

I saw a guy who made this kind of jewelry in Mexico. He said he’s been doing making this type of jewelry for 12 years. He used a small version of a band saw.

These pieces are sometimes called “cut coin jewelry”. Do a search on google and you will see plenty of sites that make similar types. You may be lucky to find more just like what you have.
check this site out if you like.

These are done with a saw called a scrollsaw
Im actually researching legality issues on different currencies when i chanced upon this site
As a scroller myself i can assure you there is more than one scroller out here that does this type of work Dave Freeman wrote a book about scrolling in metals and other mediums

i admit, this jewellery is really cool….but this kind of coin defacement is illegal, how do people get away with it? and, just because they do get away with it deosn’t make it right.
