Calgary Beer Logo

September 30th, 2006

Design: Unknown
Date:1970s

calgary_beer_logo_canadian_.jpg

Produced in the prairie regions of Canada in the 1970s, Calgary beer was apparently discontinued due to poor sales. The design for this logo is still great, and rumour has it, that this beer is still sold in Saskatchewan. Does anyone have more information?

I know that Molson’s Bohemian beer is available in Saskatchewan. What is strange to me, is that Bohemian is not available in Alberta….

    Anyone know about Calgary beer?

  • 2. Antony Hare  |  October 5th, 2006 at 11:07

Looks like it’s a Molson product that was brewed in Regina, now Edmonton. Here’s a link for starters:

    All the best,

Calgary is still available in saskatchewan. Bohemian is available in saskatchewan and the saskatchwan pilsner is better than the Alberta Pilsner. It’s too bad the rest of the country could not enjoy the cool taste of this Calgary beer.

Hi, The design goes back to the late 1890′s. Was done by A.H.Hider. The style of label you show is from the 70′s . Carling bought the brewery in the late 70′s or early 80′s. After them Fosters had the brewery for a short time and then Molsons took over the plant. Molsons closed the Calgary plant and moved production to Edmonton. A fews years back production was limited to the Edmonton plant only. I make it out to Sask every once in a while and i allways bring some home. I also collect calgary brewery items and am allways interested in meeting and talking with others interested in the brewery.

REGARDING COMMENT 8 I HAVE MADE A MISTAKE WITH THE LIMITED EDITION NUMBER IT SHOULD BE NUMBERED (805) AND NOT 306 AS STATED. AS I DO NOT KNOW HOW MANY WERE PRODUCED I DON’T KNOW IF THIS WILL MAKE MUCH OF A DIFFRENCE. MANY THANKS.

Calgary beer is not only still sold in Saskatchewan, its the #1 selling beer at Regina’s “Manhattan Room”, a rock bar/dive.

I highly reccomend checking it out if you’re in town.

  • 13. Kitten  |  September 27th, 2007 at 14:00

Yes indeed The Gaslight does sell Calgary beer in Regina– WE have a Summer special every summer…. Too bad you missed it this year , but we still sell a great deal at our special Calgary price…..

I haul many cases of the Calgary back from Saskatchewan every time I’m “home”. 2 for one buddy, 2 for another, 1 for the accountant’s husband. 2 for me!
I always have a Calgary beer wagon on the way back! It’s good stuff!
Can’t buy it in Alberta, eventhough it is brewed in Edmonton (Says the box)

  • 20. Darren  |  June 17th, 2008 at 23:39

I was in Kindersley SK. on June 14th and purchased six cases of Calgary Beer. I also saw cases of Bohemian Beer there as well. I know the bottles of Calgary Beer indicate the Edmonton plant as being the location of production, however, doing a little research, I found out that the plant was closed back in 2007. I suspect that Molson’s is simply using old labels and boxes to package the beer in wherever it is now being produced. It appears that Molson’s remaining plants are located in Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, St. John’s, and Moncton.

  • 21. Nate  |  August 17th, 2008 at 16:21

I bought some Bohemian in Thunder Bay but I didn’t see Calgary there.

  • 22. Vito  |  August 19th, 2008 at 03:44

Calgary is great – drunk mostly by old guys in Saskatchewan, as previouosly noted.

Furthemore, note that it had a slightly better taste when it was made at the Regina plant using the water from nearby Buffalo Pound Lake, which boasted for many years as having some of the wost drinking water in the country. Go figure.

Pilsner (or Pil as it’s known around here) is decent too, but Boh is truly an acquired taste.

  • 23. Brendan  |  November 8th, 2008 at 04:06

I love it, a beer that you can only get in Regina that’s brewed in Edmonton and called Calgary.

  • 24. Ray  |  December 4th, 2008 at 14:21

I have bottle left from my first visit to the Calgary Stampede in 1959, never opened. (wouldn’t want to drink it now)
The label reads “Calgary Brewing and Malting Co. Ltd.
    Is this of any value?

  • 25. Eliteghost  |  December 7th, 2008 at 01:50

Im from saskatoon and yes its sold here. Canadian and Boe both. It gets sold here because the molson factory was here but when they closed a deal was that they had to keep selling calgary and boe in saskatchewan. Amazing beers

  • 28. darren  |  January 26th, 2009 at 01:48

Here’s a suggestion folks. In order to convince Molson to start selling Calgary beer in Alberta again, we, and everbody else who enjoys this beer should contact Molson’s customer service center through their website or by phone. It’s not just the beer I’m interested in but the various products like t-shirts, mugs, bar signs, etc. that might be made available with that great logo on them. If Molson’s gets enough feedback, they may actually pay attention to the consumer and give Calgary back it’s beer.

  • 29. Greg Ball  |  February 14th, 2009 at 21:57

Great Idea Darren. I’ve contacted them as well.
Here’s to getting “Calgary” in Calgary….
    Cheers.

I have an original Buffalo Beer cooler/vending machine in good shape. It must be about circa 1940′s or 50′s. Anyone interested in buying? I live two blocks from the original Calgary brewery.

  • 32. ed the duck  |  May 5th, 2009 at 23:19

  • 35. Chris  |  July 25th, 2009 at 20:20

I just wanted to leave a comment for Traci ( comment #16 March 23 / 08. ) Regarding the buffalo chair you have, it is one of an original pair. I had two very good friends working in the Molson brewery at the time it was shutting down, the chairs were discovered in storage. I put in a word for them but never heard anything back even though I did manage to get one the earliest bottles produced for Calgary brewing and malting. I still stay in touch with one of my friends from that time and can inquire about history if you are still interested.

Where can you get Calgary beer in the United States?

  • 38. Darren  |  September 13th, 2009 at 00:06

Calgary Beer is apparently being brewed in Toronto. Molson is still using old packaging indicating Edmonton production. The Edmonton plant was closed down in 2007. The beer had been sold in the Northeastern US, but I am unsure whether it’s still available there.

  • 39. Darren  |  September 13th, 2009 at 00:16

The Grey Cup is in Calgary this year. Would you not think that Molson would be smart enough to make Calgary Beer available during festivities week. I believe that they simply don’t want it in Alberta where it would compete with their own brands like CANADIAN, which of course is the “OFFICIAL” beer of the Vancouver olympics. Having picked up CALGARY BEER from the CARLING O’KEEFE purchase in1994, I think it bothers MOLSON that a former competitors brand would outsell any of theirs.

I’m from the U.S., San Antonio Texas in fact. My husband and I went to a burger joint several year back and were offered a beer on special, yes that right “Calgary” beer. We loved it and have been asking the burger joint, liquor stores, and big grocery stores to order it for us to no avail. Too bad about the beer only being sold in one part of Canada, even worse not at all in Texas.

  • 41. Duaine  |  October 4th, 2009 at 13:37

Interesting! I have had the chance a few times to buy Calgary. Allways liked it. It looks like there are some other collectors out there. If you have any items to trade, sell or just want to know the value please feel free to contact me and i can help out from there. Ill check back often, just leave a note! Thanks

  • 42. Gil  |  October 20th, 2009 at 10:18

Am an old guy (72) in Calgary.
Horseshoe & Buffalo always my brand & last 2 cases bought here in 1992, 100 yr anniv, whitch still have.
Also liked Cascade made here in Calgary, dont know what became of that.
20 yrs ago bought Calgary brand beer in cans in California.

  • 43. Duaine  |  October 26th, 2009 at 20:32

Cascade was introduced in 1964 when the stubby came out. I think it was discontinued about the late 60′s. Havent seen one with the new style buffalo which started in the early 70′s. Great to hear another Calgarian likes the beer!

  • 44. shawn  |  October 29th, 2009 at 17:09

  • 47. Peupere  |  February 8th, 2010 at 18:07

I have an unopened Calgary beer that I bought in 1957 during the Calgary Stampede so it must have been around before 1970′s.

  • 48. Duaine  |  May 6th, 2010 at 18:34

Wow! Lots of Calgary beer fans around. Did anyone get the cooler? Brad comment # 27 I have lots of double bottles if your still looking.. Other collectors pop in and say hello! Stay thirsty my friends!
