We all sigh when we see maple leaf slapped on a logo. It’s so common and it speaks to how much Canadian business is just a subsidiary to a foreign business. Is McDonald’s really Canadian or does Canada belong to McDonald’s? It certainly speaks to the suspicion that our country is not really ours.

Interesting! I am an Australian living in Toronto for just over a year now and I have been amazed by how many logos have a maple leaf on them ! I couldn’t believe it when I saw that McDonald’s logo!
I know that Canada is a proud country but to me (and other “foreigners” I’ve discussed this with), it looks like the country is suffering from a bit of low self-esteem and are going overboard to try and prove otherwise.
The weird thing is that foreigners’ perception of Canada is not like this at all – so in reality, Canada has nothing to prove. It’s all in their head! So I was interested to find this coming from a graphic designer.
