The Sudbury miners special. For over fifty years this lunch box has been the staple of the working man/woman across Canada. Unbelievably this ubiquitous design has been under the radar of every collection but its impact and reach is profound. An everyday design, it is a simple and humble design with beautiful details and a long lasting rugged construction. These do not seem to wear out but only get a deeper patina and narrative with use.

Is this lunchbox an original design or is it based on other metal lunchboxes?

  • 6. Tony  |  September 20th, 2008 at 22:08

They’re made in Sudbury, Ontario. It’s an original design for sure eh. Wanted something he could sit on while waiting for the cage, to come up from underground… so he made this luchbox. That’s the story I got. The rest is history.

I bought my identical lunchbox from a junkbox in Winnipeg while travelling across Canada on the train about 20 years ago and still love it. I can fit a bottle of JD in it easily too! Two bottles at a push!

I have been going to work with my lunchbox for twelve years now. Before that I would carry my same lunchbox with me through elementary school for eight years. This L.May design has served me for 20 years and is continuing to be by my side. Thank you L. May. You make great boxes.

Just a comment. I saw the t.v. show Dragons Den. All the best with your busines. My Mom bought me my first lunch pail to start my first paying job, that was when I turned 18. I still have the same pail. I did not buy any other pail. I still use it today, I just turned 54. You do the math, the lunch pail still works great. Your Dads workmanship was right on. Keep making them, GREAT PRODUCT.
    Thank you

My mom bought me one of the lunch boxes in 1976. She is from Coniston, ONtario – right by Sudbury.
I still have it today..infact it’s sitting right next to me as I type this!

I have been trying for a few years now to purchase metal lunch boxes for my kids…everything made these days seems so cheaply made but not cheap to purchase – I would like to find a location in the Maritimes that carries YOUR metal lunch boxes or can I buy direct from YOU?

Tired of buying lunch bags twice a year!!

    Hey!
Your lunch boxes look appealing! I would like to order one. I am not quite sure on what one to buy. Which one is more practical for the work place? The 10” or the 12”?

  • 20. Lunchbox Lady  |  January 25th, 2010 at 06:26

    Hey, Baxter

I’d recommend the 12″ long size for work. It’s got more interior space and if you want to tip on it’s side for a seat, it’s a little taller. To chat or more info, call 705.524.2721

Des, I too live in the UK. I suggest you try contacting Catherine at L.May direct via their website – I did & they were very helpful & shipped one direct to me.

    You won’t be disappointed.

I bought my lunch box in Prince George BC back in 1981 and I am still packing it to work. The only problem is the catches have worn out. I would like to aquire at least one catch to replace the one that has failed. I hope someone can help me out here.

Was walking through our local Value Village just this afternoon and came across this luch pail all dull looking aluminum. The price on the side said $2.99. I though how could I go wrong. I had seen many co worker in my past as a Tool maker in southern Ontario but never gave it much thought to look to aquire one of these. Once home I noticed the little stamp on the top left hand side of the front of the box saying L.May Manufactured Sudbury. So I decided to look this up on Google. The story of the history of how they came to be is fantastic. This one looks to have been used for at least 30 years or so and I hope to use it myself for many years to come!
