Newfoundland – Dog Breed
January 24th, 2006
Design:
Date:
The Newfoundland was developed in the province of Newfoundland around 1000AD. They are the original working dogs; used to draft heavy fishing nets and possess natural water rescue tendencies (including webbed feet and thick coat for icy water). It may have been Lord Byron who described them best, “Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity and all the Virtues of Man without his Vices.” These gentle giants were almost extinct in the 1920′s but fortunately the breed has bounced back.

I have been owned by Nefies for almost 25 years and they are without a doubt the best dog a man could have.
They bare just big bear like animals.

I grew up with newfs and they are just the sweetest, most loveable dogs with the greatest intelligence, patients, and wisdom. I love my gentle giants.

I have never owned a nefoundland dog before, I would sure like someday though. They have a very distinguished look, and are big as they are gentle.

Proud owners of a nine month old Newfi.
Trying to find out what causes the dog to want to bite onto your arm when you go out into the water. Is it they’re instinct because they are a rescue dog? Ours just doesn’t want us to go into the water.

My husband and I are proud owners of 4 Newfs – Molly 6, Becky nearly 3, and the pups Lani and Siska who are 7 months old. We adore our Newf family and would not consider changing them for anything!!

I have been looking up info on Newfoundlands for over a year now and finally decided it was time to get one for myself, I now have my gorgeous Newf, a black boy called Benson he is 9weeks. They really are the best dogs ever, I have never met such beautiful and placid animals. I cant wait to extend my Newf family over the years!

I am in love with these dogs! Me and my boyfriend would love one, but it would be left with the cat a few hours each day. Will he still be happy?
14. Ria | August 16th, 2007 at 14:46
We have had a newfie since November. He turned one last May and he is the best dog ever. Extremely smart – I can talk to him as I would talk to any person and he understands his commands. Sometimes stubborn when he is not in the mood to learn and definitely sensitive to the tone of my voice. He knows when he has done something to upset his mommy. I would not trade him for anything!! He drools a whole lot more in the summer but I love that he just thinks he is a lap dog. Loves to cuddle and hug. He is the best!
15. Flossie | August 17th, 2007 at 13:48
We have a big beautiful boy just like the one in the picture. He is as beautiful inside as he is outside. Newfies are the BEST breed in the world.
16. E K | August 18th, 2007 at 06:26
I can’t see it being a problem leaving your newf with the cat, so long as the cat is good with dogs. My newf is great with cats as he was reared with them and loved playing with them the same way he would play with his litter mates. It helps too if you get your newf as a puppy, then they will never think any different of cats as he/she will be used to them from the beginning.

I met my first newf when i was about nine months old and have been hooked ever since. I just recently lost a newfie mix (probably retriever of some kind), who i had for three years, got him from the pound. He was the most devoted being, and i miss him dearly. But looking forward to a new newf addition to my family eventually. They are the best!!!
24. Mike | October 5th, 2007 at 13:38
Our dog is a cross between a Newf and an Aussie Shepherd. He’s, much smaller than a full Newf; only about 60 lbs. Great with kids, gentle as can be. And quite smart. And somehow he came out with a curly tail. Really a great mix of breeds.

I seen two puppys at the start of summer and should have someone to teach me a new trick or two in about 6 weeks. However yesterday I bumped into two 8 year olds who didnt seem very interested in moving. As I’m normally quite active I thought it would be a shame to have a dog who wanted to stay home, however in general I’m guessing that maybe they didn’t have too happy or interesting a life which I also know can happen. Their coats were also dull and frizzy like they’d had a bad encounter with a perm or hairdryer at the hairdressers and the lower part of eye was quite drooped and you could see more of a red rim than the actual eye itself which seemed lost somewhere above. This isnt typical of the breeed is it. If not any special tips particular to the breed on protecting and nourishing the coat. The two I seen yesterday looked as though you might do more harm intenting to brush them. If it’s not typical of the breed I feel so sorry for them because as I say the one who stayed longest seemed so distant and uninterested.
Yesterday my friend insisted that Id be mad to take one but I felt such love and happiness around the pups in summer that I was so sure we’d be happy together. I know they were pups but they were also well cared for. My last dog was with us for 12 years before illness took him and I seen him age and become ill but he was beautiful within to the last and it shone without and he was always interested in the world despite his pain. Champ, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel but one of a kikd – it sounds more like he had the personality of a Terranova/Newfoundland from what I’ve read so far.
Love and Hugs

Allie, our Newfie joined the family back in April. I didn’t want a big dog–I got suckered into it! She’s a sweetheart!! Love love love her. She thinks she is a baby and loves to sit across my 9yr old son’s lap. Too bad he can’t move once she does that ;0 Great breed, she’s very gentle and affectionate. People are afraid of her because of her size, but they don’t know that she’d watch a burglar enter the without concern! Thank goodness we have a big yard, she certainly needs the room to gallop around playing fetch.

One of my dogs is named Rosco. He is a Newfie/Retriever and I had to put him down on Friday due to his age. He was the greatest dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I’ve had many dogs and still do but Rosco was very special. Smart, loyal, kind, beautiful and gentle as a lamb. He lived a long 13 years at about 150lbs in a loving family. I would urge anyone who wanted a huge loyal and loving dog to look at Newfies. They are a pain to brush all the time and you will go through a few vaccuum cleaners but they are fantastic.
Many pictures and a blog of Rosco’s final week at myspace/geroni1971.
Cheers to Rosco 10/16/1994-10/19/2007

33. robert lewis | November 18th, 2007 at 13:30
how can you say this is ugly…i would hate to see your partner
34. Vicki | November 19th, 2007 at 11:20
I have a black female almost two that looks identical to this one!
I have an almost four year old chocolate male “Ozzy” and “Kenya” my girl. I have discovered that people fall on one side or the other with newfs – they either LOVE them, drool, hair and all… or think they are ugly and wouldn’t be near one if you paid them.
I’ve lived with newfs now for four years in my home and find that, with a little attention, drool can be kept to a minimum with a towel and an attentive eye. And one good brushing a week, starting from puppy-hood, is all my guys need… and I show these dogs in the conformation and obedience rings so trust me – once a week keeps them good enough for me. :)
I couldn’t image a more wonderful, loving, caring, and loyal pet for any family. They might be giant dogs but they seem to know their size. Their gentleness will amaze anyone.
LOVE NEWFS!!

36. Joe Scott | November 22nd, 2007 at 07:26
Our 2 1/2 yr. old Weatherby looked nearly identical to this pic when he was 18 months. Simply the most incredible pet I’ve ever owned, and best of all, he doesn’t drool!
For anyone visiting Saugatuck, MI, you can see Weatherby at our shop, Delphina Naturally, most weekends.

Our family has enjoyed two blacks and a Landseer, checkout the breeder as much as they check you out, make sure the dogs line has clear hips and elbows, take out pet insurance and be prepared to committ to ongoing grooming
there is no better breed in the world, I have posted our breeder’s URL above lots to learn

Hi everyone,
We just bought our first Newf puppy and he is 6 months old. We think he is great, but he seems overly energetic than what we expected at this age. Our concern is that we have a 2 year old son and a baby on the way. He pushes our son over and will not stop biting our hands and arms. He actually will place my son’s entire arm in his mouth and this causes my son to cry. My concern is going to be more for my son, and don’t know how to curb this behaviour. We have been to puppy obedience class and have signed up for further classes in January. Can someone help with educating us on what to do with our Newf, named Magnus. I am just tired of my son getting hurt by him. Thank you so much everyone.

I got my first Newfy in 1994 a year after I married. As I’d had Bernese Mountain and Golden Retrievers during my life time the Newfy seemed to be the next in line as far as progression and very similar to those breeds too in that they are such gentle, docile what I call ‘Proper Dogs’ not a pocket dog or a new cross breed with a new name or one of these tuff dogs which are so unpredictable you can’t socialise them. Of the three breeds I’ve had it’s difficult to split them and strange as it sounds the drooling actually grows on or you warm to it. The Newfy is a magnificent endearing breed and all breeds have something that you may not be over the top about but one thing for certain they are 100% safe with kids any age. Early in the piece when I was married I had my Newfy trained in fact trained too well. I felt she had lost some of her carefree attitude and had to slightly untrain her. She died a while back from a heart murmur which was one of the saddest times of my life, I wish it was my wife that died rather than my beloved Newfy. Everytime I see a Newfy it gives me warm fuzzies.

We just got our first Newfie a week ago, from a sad boy trying to selling her to the first person that would buy her. They were moving and she had go. This little boy was out all night in the cold and snow trying find someone to buy her. I really had no idea what I was about to purchase at the time for 50 dollars for which he took sadly. After getting the puppy in the house and looking a little closer, found she was the best looking dog ever for the price I paid. After some research on the dog, found this dog is worth alot more. She is so much fun, and very smart. She is now 10 weeks old and black as coal. Her name is Tinker Bell, and she is so soft and gentle. I can not wait till she grows up and goes hiking and camping.

We raised our son with Newfies. Betsy was his older sister and Molly is his younger sister. You couldn’t ask for a better family dog and companion. Our son plans to have two male Newfies of his own someday.

What a beautiful dog! I am the proud owner of a 7 month old Newfoundland, Zeus, he looks like this dog but he has a white patch on his chest and a white tip on the end of his tail. He is my pride and joy! I LOVE him soooo much. He is very sweet and spoiled! I cant think of not having him around.
47. madonna | January 13th, 2008 at 20:28
Newfoundland dogs are the best in the world…and I am not just saying this because I am from the same island where they originated. I have met several Newfies and they are so beautiful and well mannered that I would hope to own one or two one day soon. I did once own 2 different dogs of mixed Newfoundland breed and Labrador Retiever breed, and have to say they were the most wonderful pets and protectors that I have ever known. Even if I cannot have a full breed Newfie, I will settle for a mixed breed of the Lab and Newfie, because they are terrific and will win your heart at first glance.

Hi
I recently lost my beautiful Newfie ‘Blossom’ at age 11. They are the best dogs you could possibly want or own, any one who is toying with the idea of buying one just do it!!!!!
I defy you to find a puppy that has softer fur than a Newfie they are the best.
Regards to all Newfie owners all over the world.

Newfies look so beautiful and are so gentle and affectionate. They almost look like giant teddy bears, but they can protect their human companion as well as practically any breed of dog. I really want one of these too! :)

That dog is the cutest thing!!! We have a Newfy mixed with hybrid wolf. A neighbors male wolf jumped a 6 ft fence to get to the Newfy girl. The owner did not have the heart to get the babies aborted. I have one of the puppies. He is 6 years old and the best dog i ever had. Beautiful disposition, learns fast and is soooo loving.

We’ve had 4 of them and they are the best dogs that I have ever owned. They are the only dogs that I want because they are gentle, playful (oh the horror of 150lbs jumping on you), and are active. Our’s died alittle while back but she was very fun to be around and I wish she was still here.
61. Miky | June 3rd, 2008 at 11:03
I own my first Newf his name is Oscar, These dogs grow really fast and because of this there joints stay loose for at least 1year of there life and they take upto 2years to reach there max size. for atleast the first year they rely on a really good food, not some cheap and nasty food, do goto you local vet and see what they sugest. my newf is on Hills science plan this is around £46 and 1x15kg bag last him about 3weeks now, I do advice people to do some research on the net and make sure you know as much about the bread as you can before buying one.
Every nice post about this bread could not be anymore accurate.
62. Maria tavender | June 28th, 2008 at 17:39
this dog is so awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!! but my problem with this dog is that it’s so big and furry!!!!!!!but i love that it drouls and snores alot!!!!
63. Tom | July 4th, 2008 at 07:26
There is no doubt in my mind that this is the best breed ever. I live in Montana and have had newfs all of my life. They are the only breed i will ever own. I currently have an enormous 2 year old male “Lord Vader” and he is the most devoted “lapdog” I have ever owned. These dogs are truly gentle giants and well worth purchasing if you have the room for one.
64. Debra | July 6th, 2008 at 03:53
Hi everyone
Isn’t this dog just beautiful! the Newf is one of the best breeds ever. As I deal with all different breeds everyday (I am a dog groomer), this breed is just the best – looks, temprament, just beautiful.
I am about to become ‘owned’ by an 8 week old Newf next week and I just can not wait!. My last newf 4 years ago very sadly died of bloat and it had taken me 2 years to get over him. My husband isn’t best pleased i am getting another one as he drooled and snored louder than him!!! (snored that is!)
I am ready now for my new baby boy in which I have named him: ‘Ralph’, I have spent a fortune on things for him and no doubt I will keep buying things for him. I love my 2 children so much – further than the stars but my Newf, I will love further than that – I hope I don’t sound awful but I do LOVE this breed sooooo much and I am looking forward to my life with him
Thank you everyone for reading this xxxxx

Hi everyone, sorry to be such a pain, but you may be wondering why I sent this so early in the morning!!!
I am from Liverpool UK and it is the afternoon here
66. Debra (Liverpool UK) | July 6th, 2008 at 04:24
Please forgive me if I have posted this before as it is not showing on the comments page!!!!
I am about to be owned next week by an 8 week old black boy which I have named him ‘Ralph’. I just can not wait, my last newf very, very sadly died of bloat in which took me 2 years to get over him, it was awful…..
I work with lots of different breeds (I am a dog groomer) and this breed is the most beautiful looking, a wonderful temprament, the most honest eyes and the look as if they just wants to please you.
My husband sadly does not feel the same way as me over my new ‘baby boy’ or any dog for that matter! as my last newf drooled and snored so loud and shed hair so much – well, I just don’t care about any of that as I shall look after him but I am sure he will end up loving him just as much as me…
I also have 2 young children whom I love until the end of time but my newf, I will love beyond that – oh please don’t think I am awful saying that….No doubt I will end up getting another one but for now, I am so looking forward to spending my life with my children and especially my beautiful Ralph…xxxxxx

Just got my Newfie/Lab mix. Her name is Montana Skye. Her nickname will be Tana. She is 7 weeks old. She is very smart and adorable. I got her in Bozeman, Montana and I live in Iowa. I was working there for a few days. It was my lucky week. She flew home with me in first class and slept all the way. She was a little jet lagged the next day, however. I have had several labs in my life and always found them to be the most amazing friends. I have always loved Newfoundlands, so now I have the best of both worlds. My 3 cats, however, wonder if I have lost my mind!

We have a Newfoundland crossed with a St. Bernard named Meatloaf. We live on a farm and ‘Meat’ protects the place. His bark seems so serious, but he is just a peach. Our gas man was afraid to deliver and asked if we could do something about him. We told him to just throw him a treat and the bond was established. Never needs to be tied. Follows me everywhere. He rubs up against people and you need to protect your knees. Lays out in the drive when it was 29 below zero. I will never have another as great as this fellow.

I just love the Newfoundland breed and the Labrador breed too, and a mix of the two is probably the best you will ever find anywhere! You get the in between size, no drooling, minimal shedding, and the beauty combined from both. I had a pet named Trigger that was a mix of both breeds and I will tell you, he was the best pet ever, besides my first pet Blackie, who was a Lab (although he was the runt of the litter he was a protector). I think the black Lab is the best to mix with the black Newfoundland, that way you have a solid color animal. I have never seen this mix before my dog, and I have not seen another since then. Both breeds are a joy to own, so those who own a Newfie or a Lab, treasure your pet, because he or she will be your best friend in the world.

Dear Madonna,
Thank you so much for your post on your Newfie/Lab mix. We are adopting a female puppy in a week and have received so many negative emails from “concerned” family members who think she will drool too much or be too big. While these are obvious considerations I really appreciate your experience and value your opinion. Thanks.

i have a 1 year old newfie, Guinness, who is a really good boy except for his fear of floors and stairs and any thing shiny, and by that I mean surfaces to walk on like bridges in the winter if they have ice on them, if it has rained wooden boards, and our hardwood floors. Is anyone elses newfie like this and any help for him. Will he out grow this when he gets mature? He is our big goofy newfie and we love him, just want to help him. Debbie

about long walks, etc. – yes newfies need exercise but actually not good to exercise them tooo much when they are growing so as not to stress their bones. They are not built for long runs, (they were built to haul fish nets).Yes, they will take your arm in the water (my friend’s newfie Husla used to do that when we went swimming), they are naturally inclined to be rescuers in the water, just hang on and they will tow you to shore. They ARE the best. Met my first newf nose to nose when i was a year old and have loved them ever since. I had either a small newf (he was about 90 lbs) or a newf mix,(god knows who gave him up, i hadn’t had him a week and we went on a hike off leash and my brother’s dog got in the face of a horse in the wilderness and wouldn’t quit, but Kofi was just as mellow as could be) though he was all newf heart, who did not mind a 2 year old playing underneath him when we were at the vet’s office. They are protective of children. They may knock a child over (maybe with their tail) when they are young out of sheer size, but if you train them right they will be great babysitters. They are extremely smart and beyond gentle, yet mine could still scare away a bear and had a roar of a bark when he wanted to ( he didn’t like the hissing sound that the hot air balloon that flew over our house in the summer up in the mountains made). Happy Newf Love:)

agree newfie and lab mix is the best – mine may have been a lab mix but the more i think of it i think he was just a small newf. Lab’s can be a bit hyper and don’t really settle down till they are at least 3 or 4 or 5 – newfie’s reallly are naturally mellow (if you look at ad s from unknowing newfie owners they remark on how mellow this puppy is, but i have never met an un-mellow newf, though they do have a lot of energy for the first couple of years, you will not need to hike or run your newf 5 miles a couple of times a week like you would a lab just so they will sleep). Sure they are big, but i think they do know their size once they grow into it and compensate with their gentleness. They are the most devoted companions. If you really have a newf/lab mix she/he probably won’t be more than 100 lbs max (as opposed to 120-160), which is more manageable, and she probably wont’ drool (as much). Enjoy your beautiful dog!

no problem Andi, glad that you are considering a mix of the two breeds. the one i mentioned, Trigger, was also the runt of his litter too, so he was pretty small in weight and height, how ever his brother Max was a lot bigger, almost the size of a regular Newfie. But like I said, there was hardly any drooling from the one we had and from Max as well. I didnt know who owned Max but I used to see him almost every day at high school and he wasant a drooler either. All i know is that the mix between the breeds is possibly the best mix you will find. The gentleness of the Newfie and the energy of the Lab, what a combination! I am not sure on the health problems of a mix like this, but I do know that there was nothing wrong with my dog, he was a strong little guy and protective too. Trigger faced bigger dogs and protected my dad by putting himself between my dad and the attacking dog. Good luck on everything and hope you get the dog of your dreams :)

I went to a local shelter with downloaded photos of half a dozen large adult dogs I was interested in. When I arrived they asked me if I wanted to first meet “the sweetest dog we ever met”. Must be one sweet dog, I thought, given the number of dogs they have known. Of course she was a Newfie (with a little Lab in her) and they were right.
Poor thing weighed only 65lb, had been abused, neglected and overbred– very sweet but a bit nervous and depressed. “Sweetie” is now 130lb, happy, healthy and living with us on 4 acres of woodland. She wanted company so we returned and adopted a Rottweiller/Shepard mix that was among my original pictures. She’s a happy girl.
