A reworking of a symbol we know and love, the Canadian Unity Flag is an attempt at creating a more inclusive emblem of our nation by including blue bars within the standard red and white (a proportional representation of the french-speaking population). A little-known relic of the contentious Quebec Sovereignty debates of the early 90s, the Canadian Unity Flag is not without a little controversy of its own. While the intent behind the Flag was to recognize the francophone population as a distinct yet integral society within Canada, there were (and still are) those who felt it went against melting-pot notions of unity. In spite of the continuing debate of melting-pot versus cultural mosaic ideologies, the Canadian Unity Flag remains a well-intentioned effort by french and english alike to unite behind a more inclusive symbol.
