RCMP Red Serge

RCMP TUNIC RED SERGE.jpg

“The Red Serge is the formal and ceremonial uniform of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It consists of a scarlet military dress-style coat, replete with a low-neck collar, brass buttons, and golden braided ornamentation with a white cotton T-shirt underneath. The riding breeches are “midnight blue” with exaggerated bulges at the hips and a yellow strapping down the outside seam of each leg. The breeches are always worn with braces. Finishing off the Red Serge are brown leather riding boots, known as High Browns, a chocolate brown wide-brimmed Stetson with a glass-flat brim, and the ever-present side-arm in a brown leather holster on a brown Sam Browne belt. A white pistol lanyard is worn around the neck and connected to the side arm.
The Red Serge is not worn when an officer is on duty during a normal shift, but reserved for occasions such as civic ceremonies, as a visual representative of the security force for government dignitaries, and during public relations-related special events such as school career days.”

A couple of interesting asides, the RCMP is one of the few forces in the world that allows their uniform to blend in local dress, Indigenious members can wear braids or Sikes wear their turbins. Despite a brief relationship with Disney, this outift has become an internationally known and recognized Canadian symbol.

I am an RCMP member, and was wondering if anyone has a formal dress sam brown for sale. I would need the brown leather belt, shoulder strap, and handcuff pouch as well as all the clips that belong on the belt. Please feel free to email me if you have one for sale.
    Thanks again

There are some available if you look in the right military/police surplus store. I find the ones for my collection at a small store in new westminster. There are several in town, check them all out. I paid 50$ for mine including the cross strap and the keepers. It did not include the holster, hand cuff case, or magazine case. It seems to be a slightly different design as the clips are different, but otherwise it seems to be pretty close. The owner of the store claims to have the full accessories available if you want them

  • 7. Dennis  |  September 2nd, 2009 at 22:29

Could you possible email me the contact information of this store? I have looked locally, talked to other members, and looked all over the net and havent been able to find one? If you could just email me with any information you have at dennis_and_sheryl@hotmail.com that would be great

    Hello Everyone,
I am looking to purchase a complete Red Serge uniform. I have been collecting uniforms, both current and historical, for many years, and the Red Serge uniform is one of the few still missing.
(Size 42-44 is preferred, but ok with other sizes.)

If you have one, or know of a source or store, please let me know.
    My contact is MAPLEKANN@AOL.COM. Thanks.

Hi everyone, I am doing a research project on the Red Serge uniform. Does the Sam Browne belt go over the left or right shoulder? Photos on the web of RCMP show the left shoulder, but television shows and Sam Browne’s wiki it shows the right shoulder.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated, thank you. I’ve bookmarked your discussion.

  • 17. Louis Brunet  |  October 21st, 2009 at 15:55

    To Suzanne
Always on the left shoulder and this is notting to do if you are a lefty shooter or right hand shooter
    Louis

  • 18. Dennis  |  October 21st, 2009 at 23:40

Correct me if I am wrong, but the shoulder strap goes over the left shoulder for a regular Non-commissioned officer (Constable, Corporal, Sargeant, etc) and over the right shoulder for a commissioned officer (Assistant Commissioner, etc)

Trying to find out if a red wool jacket with a large embroidered emblem on the LF is a real RMCP issue. The label reads Looking Forward The Force MWG Made in/Fait Au Winnipeg, Canada. Has dark blue leather & cloth lining and is made quite well. Has the logo printed on the liner as well. Size 40. Looks fairly recent. Any value? Thanks You can email me at cvp2001@yahoo.com or leave reply here.

  • 63. Melanie Adams  |  September 29th, 2011 at 10:13

Hello! My dad’s an RCMP, and he can’t answer this question for me for a school assignment. “Why is the RCMP’s serge red?” It’s funny that he doesn’t know, but can anyone help me?

  • 64. DocDan  |  October 2nd, 2011 at 10:52

The red serge is red, because the first english people that have contact with the Indians in canada, wear the red uniform of UK. The indians got trust and affection for the man in red. So the NWMP choose this colour to get fast and good connections to the Indians.

  • 65. Pete  |  October 26th, 2011 at 18:42

The story is that the red jackets worn by the British military, and which the RCMP uniform is modeled after, were red so that blood stains did not show during battle, making the enemy think that the British were immortal.

  • 66. Pete  |  October 26th, 2011 at 18:45

I have some Pea Jackets, now obsolete, (not issued anymore) if any collectors are interested. Post contact information here if you are.

  • 67. Brad Bunnin  |  November 3rd, 2011 at 15:03

Pete, please let me know the sizes and prices for the pea jackets.

  • 68. Mark Sherman  |  November 11th, 2011 at 05:23

Good luck with buying a RCMP dress uniform – those thing NEVER come up on the open market and are only usually bought by nutters who have more money that sense.

You’ll be looking at around £800 not including insignia, £500 for the belt – try Ebay for boots, spurs, gloves, ect and then get a No.1 British Army Dress Uniform and use it as a RCMP No.2 uniform – ’cause you will never find a red serge…trust me I’ve spent 10 years trying
