XV Olympic Winter Games Torch

For Canada’s first winter games, the “Share the Flame” torch relay was the longest in Olympic history. In various ways, from running, dog sled and ski-doo, the relay crossed all the provinces and territories (at the time), for a total distance of about 18,000 km in a remarkable 88 days. Canadian companies rallied behind the Calgary Olympics, and Petro Canada created a lottery where ordinary citizens could win a chance to run a 1 km section of the course (very Canadian).

The actual torch design, a replica of the Calgary Tower (hardly an architectural standout but definitely a city symbol), featured laser engraved pictograms of the Olympic motto, Citius Altius Fortius, XV Olympic Winter Games Calgary Alberta Canada 1988, and the excellent games emblem.
